Rome wasn’t built in a day. It’s true. Have you seen Rome? Even a week would be too short. Oklahoma City, the Rome of the Plains, was also not built in a day. But it was settled in a day, with more than 10,000 homesteaders staking claims during a land run on April 22, 1889. Within a decade, the city’s population would double in size, overtaking the territorial capital, Guthrie, before statehood.

What was the area on which Oklahoma City was settled called before the land run?
