Dynamic Duet
Concert bills don’t really get bigger than this: Willie Nelson & Family teams up with Bob Dylan for the Outlaw Music Festival at Lucky Star Casino in El Reno. “They’re on the road again?,” you ask. “Like a rolling stone,” I respond. You cringe slightly but get over it soon because of the awesome show that awaits. Many decades into both their respective legendary careers, Shotgun Willie and the Complete Unknown still draw massive crowds eager to tick an iconic show off their live music bucket list.
July 1. Tickets start at $37.25.

With co-headlining names like Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan, the tenth anniversary Outlaw Music Festival at Lucky Star Casino in El Reno will not be a night fans forget anytime soon.
We Bring The Boom
I’m not sure who Paul is, but we thank him for inviting us to his Valley for one of the most action-packed July 4 celebrations around. Boom in the Valley at Pauls Valley’s Wacker Park has a lot of what you’d expect from a community Independence Day bash: live music, off-the-grill cookout classics, fun and games for the kids, and a fireworks spectacle night cap no one will want to miss. But the fine folks of The Valley don’t stop there. Ride a mechanical bull, enjoy a neon-fueled glow party by Oz Productions, or sign up to compete in the Watermelon Seed Spittin’ World Championship. It sounds like Paul knows how to have a good time.
July 4. Admission, free.

Here’s to Hereoes
It already doesn’t get much more patriotic than July 4, but those looking for an event that puts extra emphasis on honoring military and first-responders should turn to Lawton for the Heroes of American Fireworks Show. Held at Apache Event Field, this event will likely attract several service members and their families from the nearby Fort Sill Army post. Those who attend can expect a full festival atmosphere with live music, food trucks, games for the kids, and a beer garden for the adults. The fun begins around 4 p.m. with the fireworks set for after sunset.
July 4. Admission, free.

Huckleberry Heaven
Writer Rex Huppke once wrote for Chicago Tribune that, “Huckleberries taste more or less like blueberries, although if you say that in Montana store owners are legally permitted to shoot you.” Well, we have huckleberries here in Oklahoma too, and thankfully are far less stuck-up about the wild-growing fruit. Meet benevolent berry lovers at the Huckleberry Festival this Friday and Saturday in the town of Jay. Huckleberries and their byproducts will be available at vendor booths throughout the celebration. Friday promises live music, dancing, a car show, and a July 4 fireworks display in the evening. The fun continues Saturday with a 5K run; pancake breakfast; friendly competitions like volleyball, cornhole, and horseshoes; a pet costume contest; a full carnival; and of course, yet another fireworks display because why the heck not? Check online for a full schedule of events.
July 4-5. Admission, free. Carnival wristband, $25-$30.

The tiny, wild huckleberry inspires a full two-festival in Jay. Enjoy fireworks, games, a car show, a full carnival, and of course, the namesake berry at the Huckleberry Festival July 4-5.
Training Day
History is active and always in motion, although it is not always perceived this way. One way in which this is literally true is at Oklahoma City’s Oklahoma Railway Museum, where Free Train Rides are offered every first and third Saturday from April to August. Any train ride at all is a thrill in our opinion, but the Oklahoma Railway Museum does a good job of highlighting the historical significance of this mode of transportation. A visit to the museum before or after the ride is also recommended. Make sure you reserve your ride online as soon as possible, because while the rides are free space is limited.
July 5. Rides, free.
