As seen on a recent episode of The Oklahoma Today Podcast, Gayla Peevey is the Oklahoma-born original singer of the classic holiday song "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas" in November 1953. The song was released by Columbia Records and quickly climbed to the top of the charts.
At the time of the release of "I Want A Hippopotamus," the OKC Zoo had never before had a hippo in its collection. Though the song was not originally intended as a fundraiser for the cause, the zoo did latch on to the popularity of the song to start the Gayla Peevey Hippo Fund. The campaign was successful, and the first Oklahoma City hippo was debuted by Christmas of that year.
What was the name of the hippo that was brought to the OKC Zoo from funds raised by the "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas" song?
