Each week, Oklahoma Today staffers comb through their calendars to find a handful of great events happening across the state. Get out! See Oklahoma! And be sure to let us know what you find, either here or on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram at @oklahomatoday.
Something Wicked This Way Comes
Park your broom in Downtown OKC, and follow the yellow brick road to Summer Movies on the Devon Lawn with Wicked. Watch the Land of Oz come to life under the stars, and enjoy food trucks like Wicked Hangry and Kona Ice, plus face painting and crafts. Meet Glinda (the Ga is silent) and Elphaba from Character Connections, then warm up for a sing-along (because we know you want to belt out “Defying Gravity” in the heart of Downtown OKC). The movie starts at sundown, so bring a blanket or chair and claim your spot early, because, like Glinda, this event is sure to be . . . popular.

Truly Mag-Nificent
Most of us love a fresh flower, but have you ever given much thought to what the first flower ever might have been? Magnolias are believed to be the first flowering plant on Earth, going back a hundred-million years. The Oklahoma town of Durant is not nearly that old, but it is home to many of the gorgeous flowering trees. Their abundance in the town is celebrated every year with the Magnolia Festival, a small-town throwdown featuring a full-fledged carnival, fair food, local vendors, turtle races, and a jam-packed calendar of events.
May 29-31. Admission, free.

Great Scots!
Don your kilt and head to Yukon for the Stirling Classic Scottish Festival & Highland Games at Mollie Spencer Farm. It all kicks off Friday night with the Fire Ceremony, followed by a weekend of Celtic music, Scottish dancing, sheep herding, blacksmith demos, and Highland Games events like the caber toss and hammer throw. Browse over thirty artisan vendors, grab a meat pie, sample Scotch, and take your youngsters to the free kids’ zone. With live music from Flowers of Edinburgh and Raven’s Three, just follow the bagpipes to this plaid-tastic party.

Zoo Pals
You’ve heard of being so hungry you could eat an elephant—but what if you could eat with one? Breakfast with the Animals at the OKC Zoo lets you dine on the wild side with a breakfast spread fit for a Lion King: a loaded pancake bar, breakfast potatoes, bacon, and scrambled eggs served in the Love’s Pachyderm Building with patio views of the African savanna. Enjoy breakfast alongside elephants, rhinos, and zebras, catch special enrichment activities, chat with expert caretakers, make a butterfly-themed craft, and even feed a giraffe. Plus, two dollars from every ticket supports monarch butterfly conservation. It’s your last chance this Saturday, so don’t sleep in . . . unless you’re okay with the hungry, hungry hippos eating all the pancakes.
May 31. Tickets, $56 for adults ($36 ZOOFriends) and $46 children ($30 ZOOFriends). okczoo.org
Polka Face
Ain’t nothin’ like a Norman sunset, camping chair set up, cold drink in hand, and jammin’ to some good old-fashioned . . . polka? Yep, you read that right. Summer Breeze is back for its twenty-fifth year of music under the stars. Every other Sunday from May to August, Lions Park becomes Norman’s chillest outdoor venue with live tunes and drinks from Lazy Circles Brewing and Native Spirits Winery. June 1’s guest is Brave Combo, Texas-based “nuclear polka” legends whose wild mix of salsa, cumbia, cha-cha, zydeco, and rock will get even the uninitiated toe-tapping. Pack a picnic or grab dinner from local food trucks, and let the Summer Breeze carry you away.
