One thing we love here at Oklahoma Today is digging into the history of small towns for interesting facts and there’s a treasure trove of it in Okeene. While it’s pronounced with two syllables these days, the name was originally pronounced O-Kee-Ne with three. The name actually comes from the endings of two tribes: CherOKEE and CheyenNE. The town's school mascot is the whippet. And, at one time, it was home to the International Association of Rattlesnake Hunters. While there were some prominent industries in the town early on, including funeral caskets and a brick plant, it was mostly an agricultural economy with many farms owned by settlers of German descent. In fact, so much of the population was German that Okeene had a German-language newspaper.
What was the name of Okeene’s German-language newspaper?
