In Oklahoma, football, baseball, and basketball get the bulk of the attention, but our state has a rich sporting history in other sports, as well. One of our state's greats was Perry native Danny Hodge, who was considered one of the best amateur wrestler in the world, including an amazing 46-0 win record as a grappler at the University of Oklahoma in the 1950s. In 1957, he graced the cover of Sports Illustrated with the caption: "Oklahoma's Dan Hodge: Best U.S. Wrestler." In fact, the Dan Hodge Trophy is considered the amateur wrestling equivalent of the Heisman Trophy.
Still, it wouldn't be Oklahoma if things didn't get a little crazy. In 1959, Hodge debuted as a professional wrestler and feuded with Angelo Savoldi in the National Wrestling Alliance. In 1960, things took a bizarre turn when a match was too realistic for one member of the audience—his father, William Hodge—disrupted the fight in such a way that the elder Hodge was arrested. Their feud continued in subsequent matches, with Danny Hodge holding the NWA Junior Heavyweight title eight times over a decade.
What did William Hodge do that stopped the fight between Danny Hodge and Angelo Savoldi?
