The fact that you might be reading his question on your smartwatch owes at least a little something to Oklahoman Chester Gould, who created the iconic comic strip character Dick Tracy that first saw print in 1931. Gould's character has one of the best rogues galleries out there, which he fought with the help of his amazing two-way wristwatch—which many cite as the inspiration for the Apple Watch and other smart wearables. But would the Detective Tracy have made the same cultural impact with a different name? He almost had one before the editors of the comic strip suggested a change to Gould.
