The legends are often more fun and more interesting than the truth, which might be why the name Belle Starr is known today. Murdered on February 3, 1889, Starr's legend extended well beyond her reality. Which isn't to say she was a saint or a complete innocent, but as our own Karlie Ybarra wrote in her excellent story ("Petticoat Terror Of The Plains"), "Starr is among the most recognized female figures in Western lore, but she might also be the least understood." Much of the blame lays with a New York writer whose book not only misspelled Starr's name but saddled her with misdeeds she likely never perpetrated.

What is the name of the Richard Fox's book about Belle Starr published just months after her death?
