Each week, Oklahoma Today staffers comb through their calendars to find a handful of great events happening across the state. Get out! See Oklahoma! And be sure to let us know what you find, either here or on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram at @oklahomatoday.

Origin Story

The best part of every superhero movie? It’s how they become a hero. At the Stories on the Square event in Tahlequah, storytellers take the audience through generations of Cherokee stories passed down through their ancestors. Learn about American Indian heritage and culture with Sammy Still, who will tell the stories this month. After the stories are done, kids can make a themed craft at the Cherokee National Prison Museum. July 13. Admission, Free. visitcherokeenation.com

Find a Way

Visitors to the Myriad Botanical Gardens in Oklahoma City are used to feasting their eyes on some gorgeous plants inside the Crystal Bridge. But during Sonic Summer Movies all eyes are on the big screen on the Devon Lawn and Bandshell where, this week, viewers can get an eye full of dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. The original is still the best and it’s even better with food trucks, outdoor games, and a lawn full of friends to watch it with. July 13. Admission, Free. myriadgardens.org

This Land

Woody Guthrie’s music made an indelible mark on American history and each year in his hometown of Okemah his memory is honored with the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival. Now in its twenty-fifth year, this gathering of folk songwriters and performers promises to be one of the best yet. Oklahoma favorites Branjae, Beau Jennings & the Tigers, and Carter Sampson will perform along with acclaimed artists from across the country. July 13-17. Tickets, $10-$250. woodyfest.com

Just Peachy

Apricots are great. Dates? Amazing. Cherries are always on top. But during an Oklahoma summer, one stone fruit reigns supreme: the peach. Two towns celebrate this fuzzy fruit this week. In Porter, the Porter Peach Festival is three days of juicy fun. Fill up on peach desserts, buy fresh fruit to take home, and enjoy street games, live music, and a culinary contest on Friday called “Mrs. Parnell’s Peachy Things.” July 14-16. Admission, Free. porterpeachfestivals.com

Not to be outdone, the folks of Stratford hold the Stratford Peach Festival with a carnival, helicopter rides, street games, and bushels of fresh peaches from seven orchards participating in the event. There’s a car show, the crowning of the Peach Royalty, and even an ugly dog contest. July 16. Admission, Free. facebook.com/2022peachfestivalstratfordok

Rock on the Water

One of the main complaints about the original Woodstock Music Festival was that not enough of it took place in a lake. Those concerns are in the past as Afton has perfected the form with Aquapalooza at The Point at Grand Lake. Listen from a boat, on a raft, relaxing with a pool noodle, or just treading water while Red Dirt and traditional country artists perform on the stage. July 16. Admission, Free. 360grandlake.com
