The stories of our towns and cities are fascinating. It may feel far removed from today, but in the fairly recent past—the mid-1800s—Oklahoma was still very much the frontier and what happened here was, at best, unpredictable. Towns would pop up and disappear in no time at all. That’s what happened to Fitzgerald, established near a United States Army post, in 1902. Like a store going out of business, Fitzgerald was liquidated, with many of its buildings going to a newly established nearby town the following year. This new town continues to this day, though in 1943 it changed its name to match the name of the Army post.

What is the name of this Woodward County town near the panhandle?
