Each week, Oklahoma Today staffers comb through their calendars to find a handful of great events happening across the state. Get out! See Oklahoma! And be sure to let us know what you find, either here or on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram at @oklahomatoday.

Into the Woods

What’s better than a fair? How about a free fair! But perhaps the best combination of words is Woods Country Free Fair. Held each year at the fairgrounds in Alva, this accurately named shindig combines some of the best fall activities—livestock shows, a petting zoo, Dutch oven cook-offs, just to name a few—with a family friendly atmosphere that’s sure to start September with smiles.
September 4-6. Admission, free.

Teensy Trotters

Miniscule mustangs, stunted stallions, half-pint hoofsters: Whatever you want to call them, the pocket-sized ponies of the American Miniature Horse Registry National Show are too adorable to pass up. But just wait until they get all gussied up for fancy turnout, navigate treacherous obstacles, or hitch up their chariot for the Roman races. With 1,500 adorable bitty broncs at Tulsa Expo Square, everyone will get their fill of enjoyable equines.
September 4-13. Admission, free.

Trash and Treasure

One of the lamest things about being a grown-up is everything feels so serious all the time. You can’t screw up at work or you get fired. Don’t follow traffic rules, and you get a hefty ticket. And if you do a bad job raising your kid, they might grow up to be a serial killer. But at Bad Art: Adult Night at the Museum, the point is to create some truly awful “masterpieces.” In fact, at the Oklahoma Territorial Museum & Carnegie Library event, they give out a prize for the worst work of the night.

Air Buds

OK AirFest at the Canadian County Expo Center in El Reno is true to its name, with balloon launches (and tethered rides for the timid), paragliding, and helicopters taking to the skies. But they haven’t forgotten the land lubbers among us—there’s also a bulldog show, BMX and skateboard action, a car show, and plenty more reasons to look ahead (not just up).
September 5-7. Tickets, $25-$225

Crystal Clear

Are you sick of explaining that they are minerals, Marie? Go, be among your fellow hounds at the Fall Rock Swap at Ada’s Pontotoc County Agri-Plex. Sponsored by the Oklahoma State Council of Mineralogical Societies, this free show promises plenty of opportunities for folks to talk shop and pick up a new sparkly specimen (or two).
September 6. Admission, free.
