Each week, Oklahoma Today staffers comb through their calendars to find a handful of great events happening across the state. Get out! See Oklahoma! And be sure to let us know what you find, either here or on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram at @oklahomatoday.
Sing it with me now: O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A! What’s that spell? That’s right, it spells Lyric Theatre’s production of the musical theatre classic Oklahoma! at the Civic Center Music Hall. Climb aboard your own surrey with the fringe on top and get ready for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic with Curly, Laurey, and a whole cast of unforgettable characters in a show full of heart, humor, and a wavin’ wheat that we hear sure smells sweet. This is your chance to sing along to our state song, and celebrate a timeless musical right in the state where it all began.

Your walls called . . . they’re ready for a makeover. Each month, the Tulsa Arts District comes alive with the First Friday Art Crawl with murals, music, and creative energy. Now in its seventeenth year, this downtown tradition draws thousands for a rotating mix of exhibitions, performances, and pop-ups. Galleries, museums, shops, and studios stay open late so you can meander and maybe even bring home something new. Many venues offer free admission, which leaves more in your budget for dinner, dessert, and a little sophisticated artsy banter as a treat.

Red Brick Nights is back in Guthrie, and it’s bigger, louder, and more local than ever. On the first Saturday of each month through November, downtown turns into a mini music festival with live bands at bars, restaurants, and a family-friendly stage at Wentz and Oklahoma. You might find homemade caramel apple pie or a frozen wine slushie to cool off. So grab a drink, unfold a camping chair, and enjoy live music under a Guthrie sunset for a Southern summer barefoot red brick night. (Actually on second thought . . . keep your shoes on. Safety first.)

The time has come. Carnival games are in sight, fry vats are sizzling, and the smell of funnel cake is in the air, which can only mean one thing: it’s fair season. The Ottawa County Free Fair returns August 2-9 to the Miami Fairgrounds, packed with small-town magic that’s been deep-fried since 1916. Each night brings livestock shows, carnival rides, and, of course, fair food. Take the little ones (or adults, no judgement) for a spin on the Ferris wheel, cool off in the exhibit hall, snag a sparkly belt buckle, or just follow your nose to the turkey leg of your dreams.
August 2-9. Tickets, free.
