Sure, there is a humorous element to the idea of a Cow Chip Throwing World Championship, but the sport has historic ties to genuine resourcefulness on the Great Plains. Settlers and Plains Indians in need of fuel found that you could burn the dried dropping of bison for warmth and some light. Though we no longer need to resort to that practice as Plains dwellers, the dung tossing keeps part of that tradition alive. The Cimarron Territorial Celebration and Cow Chip Throwing Contest in Beaver not only will decide the best “fuel” flinger brings a week of food, music, exhibitions, and carnival fun to the Panhandle.

The Hinton Free Fair transforms this small town into a big-time party. Locally run and proudly budget-friendly, it’s billed as “cheap entertainment for the entire family” with rides starting at just a dollar per ticket (one ticket needed for kiddie rides, two for the adult thrills). Expect livestock and horse shows, games, exhibits, live music, and food to please any craving. Festivities start at 7 p.m.—come for the rides, stay for the gossip on the benches.

If this show is b-b-b-bad, it will be in the best way possible. George Thoroughgood and the Destroyers are Oklahoma-bound this week. See the classic ’80s blues rock band Friday at Newkirk’s 7 Clans First Council Casino. Hits like “Bad to the Bone” and “Who Do You Love” have passed the test of time, and George has plenty of hits from his platinum-selling forty year career to fill the night.

Get ready to Drink a Beer & Save a Bird at Wild Brew, Tulsa’s indoor gourmet crawl on Saturday, August 23, from 5–8 p.m. at the Arvest Convention Center. It’s not your average brewfest—it’s a good time featuring hundreds of craft brews, top-notch restaurants dishing gourmet bites, live music, artist demos, selfies with live birds, and a silent auction—all to support Sutton Avian Research’s wildlife work. Come thirsty, curious, and conservation-minded—this party’s been “hatched” for nearly three decades.

There is no need to burn your fuse up there all alone. If you’re going to run anyway, do it with great company during the Rocket Man Run 5K & Fun Walk at Gordon Cooper Technology Center in Shawnee. Participate in a 5K run or one-mile fun walk. Refreshments will be available at the finish line and the top twenty-five 5K finishers receive a medal upon completion. We hope to see all runners at the end point, even if it’s going to be a long, long time.
