Each week, Oklahoma Today staffers comb through their calendars to find a handful of great events happening across the state. Get out! See Oklahoma! And be sure to let us know what you find, either here or on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram at @oklahomatoday.
Horseplay typically is considered a bad thing, especially in a confined space like a classroom. But there’s plenty of room at Tulsa Expo Square, so horseplay is permitted—neigh, it is encouraged in fact! And audiences will cheer for that, as cowpokes of all ages guide their skilled mounts around obstacles, through patterns, and into some pretty intense slides during the Oklahoma Reining Horse Association Ride & Slide.
March 2-8. Tickets, free.

Speling is harrd, but watching your friends try to spell as they slowly become more intoxicated is not. Bring your twenty-one-and-older gang and a healthy thirst to the OKC Midtown Rotary Spelling Bee(r), where Oklahoma breweries showcase their sudsy goods as brave linguists attempt to win cash prizes for knowing the right order in which to string letters together. There’s also heavy hors d’oeuvres—I hope that’s not one of the words they have to spell—and a silent auction, so everyone can leave with a little something.
March 6. Tickets, $69.40

At one time, Woodward was one of the “wildest and wooliest” towns in what would become Oklahoma, with nearly twenty-five saloons and fifteen brothels. Things have changed around there, but residents still know how to have a good time. Case in point is the Woodward Main Street Annual Banquet, where a delicious dinner, live auction, the Woodward Main Street Awards, and a dance make for an evening to remember—and one that helps raise funds to keep the party going for another 139 years.

It’s easy to focus on our differences these days. How could a Scorpio possibly be friends with a Taurus? How might a dog person and a cat person get along? Well, maybe after watching The Odd Couple at Guthrie’s Pollard Theatre, in which perfectionist Florence and nonconformist Olive learn how to live together, we can all embrace what makes us unique and focus on the real enemy: rent prices being so high we’re all forced to have roommates.

Books can take readers on wonderful adventures to Narnia, Prythian, the Land of Oz, and plenty of other fantastical fictional worlds. But at SWANshops: Altered Books, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum in Shawnee will help artists of all experience levels venture within. The mixed-media workshop will guide participants through the process of exploring their landscapes of life and how our internal worlds are connected to nature.
March 7. Tickets, $25-$30
