Each week, Oklahoma Today staffers comb through their calendars to find a handful of great events happening across the state. Get out! See Oklahoma! And be sure to let us know what you find, either here or on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram at @oklahomatoday.

Good Morning Tulsa!

Get ready to refresh your hairdo and take your seat at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center for Hairspray, a Tony-winning musical packed with heart, humor, and plenty of hairspray. Follow big-haired dreamer Tracy Turnblad as she grooves from outsider to teen queen on the Corny Collins Show, with iconic hits like "Good Morning Baltimore," "Welcome to the '60s," and that one song with a beat you just can’t stop (the name will come to me eventually). It’s bold and bright, full of fabulous moves and even bigger messages, and you’ll be laughing, singing along, and feeling like you can change the world with a great hairdo and attitude.
Through September 21. Tickets, $42-60.

Rock the Route

Cruise down the Mother Road for the first-ever Sounds on 66, a three-day live music celebration rolling through Edmond, Arcadia, and Wellston from September 18 to 20. This unique event highlights talented local musicians, with ten shows featuring 21 artists including the Bottom of the Barrel Band and Stephen Salewon, across genres like classic rock, Americana, reggae, polka, and blues. Fuel up the tank and get ready to rock the route for one last summer send-off at iconic spots like Arcadia’s famous Round Barn and Wellston’s Butcher BBQ Stand.

Barbeque Pit Stop

If you’re serious about barbecue (and who isn’t?), the annual Cherokee Strip Cook-Off in Ponca City is the place to be. This Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned event serves up mouthwatering barbecue right on the beautiful banks of Lake Ponca. Grab a tasting kit, sink your teeth into the best BBQ around, and vote for your favorites. There’s live music, clowns, kids’ activities, cold beer, and plenty of vendors to keep the whole family entertained. Whether you’re a die-hard barbecue fan or just looking for a fun day out, the Cherokee Strip Cook-Off knows how to bring the heat.
September 19-20. Tickets, free. Tasting kits $8. sites.google.com/site/ptcherokeestripcookoff

Just Plum Delightful

Head out to Laverne, the Sand Plum Capital of Oklahoma, for the fourth annual Laverne Sand Plum Festival. And if you're like me and had to look up what a sand plum is, I'll save you a step . . . it’s a small, wild plum often used for jams or jellies, or eaten fresh. But the best way to get to know the sand plum is right here in the sand plum capital. Join this small northwest Oklahoma town for an evening of live music, great food, shopping, and family fun. Sand Plum Central offers a variety of sand plum products, including jelly, drinks, bread, barbecue sauce, and more.
September 20. Tickets, free.

Pitchfork Perfect

If you're craving small-town charm and early fall vibes, make your way to Hobart for Hometown Harvest Day. It all starts with a parade, followed by live music, a street dance, a kiss-the-pig contest, and a cowboy showdown with the Marlow Gunslingers. You’ll also find a cornhole tournament, a scavenger hunt, and even a Lil Mr. and Miss Harvest contest. Add in food trucks, local vendors, homemade pie, and inflatables for the kids, and you’ve got yourself a fall Saturday even Persephone would envy.
September 20. Admission, free.
