Oklahoma Today’s art director since 1992, Steven Walker has created designs for the magazine that have won hundreds of awards over the past two decades, including four Golds from the International Regional Magazine Association (IRMA) for Overall Art Direction. During his tenure, IRMA also named Oklahoma Today Magazine of the Year five times.
Steven, born at Fort Hood, Texas, grew up in a military family and lived in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington D.C., Alabama, Hawaii, and Germany and spent his college years in Oklahoma and Thailand. He moved to Norman in 1974 and later graduated from OU with a bachelor’s degree in advertising design.
After working for five years for the magazine’s former art director, Steven founded Walker Creative in 1987. In addition to award-winning work for Oklahoma Today, Walker Creative’s designs and logos have appeared in Print and Communication Arts magazines’ annual publications, and the company’s signage projects have been installed at Oklahoma businesses, schools, and medical facilities.
A longtime drummer for rock-and-roll bands including Osage, Loose Change, and most recently Hoppy Niles & One Arm Bandit, Steven frequently performs in the metropolitan Oklahoma City area. He and his family live in Norman.
